Conference
16-20 September 2011
The aim of the ICMI Study 21 is to critically review research on mathematics education and language diversity, consider implications for mathematics classroom practices, and set an agenda for future research. This topic encompasses research in mathematics education in relation to all forms of language diversity, including bilingual, multilingual, second language, additional language, foreign language, CLIL and other settings.

The principal aims of the
ICMI Study 21 Conference are:

. To gather together a community of researchers who are currently addressing issues of language diversity as they relate to mathematics education;

. To reflect on the current state of research on these issues and propose a research agenda for the future;

. To lay the groundwork for the study volume (to be published by Springer) and other forms of publication in order to disseminate research findings and issues for future work.

The conference will be a working meeting organised around a number of themes. The International Program Comittee (IPC) invites individuals or groups to submit papers in any of the following themes:

Theme 1: Focus on learning
Student mathematics learning and experiences in multilingual classrooms

The conference
The conference will be a working meeting with much activity taking place in working groups. The emphasis will be on discussion of papers, rather than lengthy presentations. As well as sharing their own work, participants may be expected to contribute to the review process and, at the conference, to act as discussant of one other contribution.

All papers will be peer reviewed and published in the conference proceedings. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to participate in the Study conference. This is a working conference, thus limited only to authors of accepted papers.

The conference will take place at the Monte Real Hotel, Aguas de Lindóia, São Paulo, Brasil, 16- 20 September, 2011.

The provisional fee for the conference is US$450, including registration, accommodation and meals. No funding is available for participants to attend the conference.
